Meet Cheryl Tesch. Part 1

Every Christian congregation needs at least one Cheryl Tesch. She is a "get things done person." This is the first of our two-part interview with Cheryl, who (You will see 😊) is a Christian of deep faith, humility, candor, and good humor. Over the years she has served St. Paul’s in more ways than we could probably count. For the pastors who interview her and serve along side her, it’s a great honor. If you don’t know Cheryl, you’ll enjoy this introduction; if you do know her, it will deepen your appreciation for her journey in Christ.

[00:00:00] I had a car that to this day I wish I would have never sold.

[00:00:03] What was it?

[00:00:04] A 69 Mustang Fastback.

[00:00:06] No way.

[00:00:07] 351 Cleveland.

[00:00:09] Fours being on the car.

[00:00:10] Yes, I know.

[00:00:12] I know.

[00:00:13] I know.

[00:00:14] I know.

[00:00:15] There is great angst and regret around the studio too.

[00:00:20] And now my kids even send me pictures of these cars just to tease me and taunt me.

[00:00:27] Yes. Welcome to Christ in All Things. I'm Pastor Jason Schachman. And I'm Pastor Lance O'Donnell. We have with us today a very special guest and dear friend,

[00:01:44] Cheryl Lynn Tash. Yes. Germanic. Your. Okay. No, because to me that's very different. Cheryl and Julie are two very different names. Yeah, I would agree. So now you have an assignment. I'm kind of curious. All right, Dorothy. Why did you pick Cheryl? Why did you pick Cheryl? Yeah, that'll be a fun story for you. A mom to share.

[00:04:20] Or maybe it was Bill who picked it.

[00:04:22] Maybe.

[00:04:23] Maybe.

[00:04:23] And there's a story there.

[00:04:24] Indeed. Indeed.

[00:04:26] How about Lynn? H-E-R-I. There are so many different ways people spell Sherry. It's reminding me of a song. That's the one. That's that's one. Yeah. We have a lot of moments like that. Yes. Songs pop into our heads. Yeah. Did you notice Cheryl here at the intro when when God's own child was playing? She did what I usually go. She said here. For those of

[00:05:43] you who are listening and can't see into our lovely little The other question that we ask you to prepare to talk with us about is the top three to five things That have formed you into the person that you are So I kind of Took a dive back into the past a little bit and I think if I went, you know chronologically from you know elementary school

[00:07:05] I'll say It was called the verdict and of course, you know, it had the the law room theme and everything else and We would spend a lot of time there as kids I mean during normal hours and things like that because mom would help out of course And so and you drag the kids along most of the time but then in the late hours of the restaurant business it was mom at home with three kids and

[00:08:24] All of whom were very young, you know primarily under 10 years of age and

[00:09:44] My one brother in particular Kurt he would do of have to help of course and so I think you know a lot of times you always assume that the oldest is always gonna be the more that domineering that's not the right word but people pleaser and so doesn't want to get in trouble because wants to make everybody happy or responsible or you know or feels responsible to take to make sure that everything gets done and so they don't find themselves getting into trouble and

[00:11:00] then there's the babies of the family. the rebel side. And that's always been, I would say that side took shape when I was in high school. And probably, so I had, where I grew up in West Dallas, the entire neighborhood was public school

[00:12:20] kids. Down the street from us were kids, was a family that went to Lutheran grade school and Yes. I can't imagine Tyler doing that. Oh yeah. Yeah, just back literally a couple weeks ago. Yeah, I actually totally can see Tyler doing that. So for what it's worth, you asked, Pastor Shakkin, you asked Cheryl, what's the number one thing that formed using human being? Yeah. You talked about, you basically answered

[00:13:40] a birth order question.

[00:13:41] You did.

[00:13:42] Yes.

[00:13:43] I'm the first born.

[00:13:45] Which means da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.

[00:13:47] And in my mid, early, I'm sorry, early to mid 20s, he opened his second restaurant in Jefferson, Wisconsin.

[00:15:02] And-

[00:15:03] Is that when you moved out here?

[00:15:04] Yeah.

[00:15:05] And-

[00:15:06] And we should clarify for you, opening, my dad was in the hospital with a heart attack. And so he, mom calls me, my brothers, and said, you got to open the restaurant, dad's

[00:16:22] in the hospital.

[00:16:24] And all of us obviously have jobs at that point.

[00:16:26] In your home? one nightmare after another, that one. And they should have known, they should have seen the writing on the wall when one of the people that was interviewing for a position there literally stole money from my mother's wallet as she was being interviewed. She stole the wallet and they later found it down by the river in Jefferson.

[00:17:40] Yes.

[00:17:41] So that restaurant was very short-lived.

[00:17:44] And again, mother was great fun. And I. So just to try to recap a little birth order is a huge part

[00:19:04] of who you are.

[00:19:05] Yeah.

[00:20:07] over at Divine Savior, I think it was called, or I don't know, something over on Beloit Avenue, which I'm surprised I can't remember the name of that because

[00:20:10] the pastor there and his wife and their daughter Sarah, I was her, we were best

[00:20:15] friends all through school. So one of, finish it, Martin? I did. I said there is no way I am changing schools. Yeah. So you're driving all the way in every morning. Yeah. Um, and one of the south side. Yeah. So, and mom didn't put this in her in her interview, but so because at the time

[00:21:41] she was working at the district office, so I would drive her to the district office,

[00:21:45] drop her off and then drive cross town to Martin Luther and then go back and pick And then I became known as Bob's sister. And then later it was, oh yeah, your Bob and Kurt's sister. Then I had no identity other than being someone's sister. So you weren't from here? I'm not from here, now I had no friends here. Yeah. I mean, I thought, you know, when we moved at that age,

[00:23:02] for me, life was over.

[00:23:04] I mean, come on.

[00:23:05] I mean, you're taking me away from all of my friends. He'd actually pick up New Year's Eve day in the retail world was a big day for sales. And he would go over to Colters and work one day and make hundreds and hundreds of dollars just selling furniture for one day. So what year was it that he died again? 2014. It was 2014. January of 2014.

[00:24:20] Yeah.

[00:24:21] And I still, to this day, I'm still like, oh, he would just love Levi.

[00:24:25] And Levi was born three short months after my dad died. I still am on the planning committees for all of our class reunions, and so I keep in touch that way, but Close friendships. No those don't exist. You know, I'm struck by listening in this will probably get us into the next segment You guys are busy When you're a kid. Mm-hmm. I mean your mom and dad mom and dad are working dad's working two jobs

[00:26:45] really changed, I would say, at 19 when I got pregnant.

[00:26:46] Oh yeah. Yeah, so of course the person who was the father

[00:26:51] at the time, he of course suggested abortion.

[00:26:54] And I knew, I mean, my mom was already at that point

[00:26:57] in time part of the pro-life movement, if you will.

[00:27:03] And I wouldn't even consider it.

[00:28:03] thankful to provide Christ in all things to you as a gift. But it's not free to produce and distribute.

[00:28:06] So if you'd like to help us make Christ in all things a self-supporting show and have

[00:28:16] A donation of any kind gets you a dozen environmentally friendly Christ in all things straws to share

[00:28:21] with your friends.

[00:28:22] Pastor Shockman loves these.

[00:28:24] That is so not true.

[00:28:25] You love those way too much and I still can't believe you bought them.
